Choose the fabric and assess the existing headliner before planning the stars. A fresh surface cannot make up for a weak or deteriorated layer underneath it.
What can be upholstered?
The headliner is the interior ceiling panel. Upholstering it changes the surface you see and touch; it is different from modifying the vehicle’s structural roof. Adjacent pieces can be discussed together so that the ceiling, pillars and other trim feel like a considered interior.
Our upholstery scope includes headliners, pillars, sun visors, door panels and other suitable interior trim. Seats and dashboards are outside our upholstery services. Dashboard accent lighting is available as a separate lighting service; that does not mean we recover dashboards.
List the individual pieces you want changed. “Black interior” can mean a roof-only conversion to one person and a much broader trim project to another. A clear list avoids surprises when comparing quotes.
Black suede or Alcantara: where should the budget go?
Black suede is Oddie’s Customs’ recommendation when the priority is a dark, suede-look finish on a tighter budget. Alcantara is our preferred premium option. Those are our material recommendations, not a claim that one fabric is the right answer for every car.
The word suede needs clarification when comparing estimates. Natural suede, synthetic suede-look fabrics and branded Alcantara are different products. Ask what material is being supplied, look at a sample and confirm the intended backing and application. Do not treat an “Alcantara-style” description as proof of genuine Alcantara.
Look at the sample beside your seats and existing trim in daylight. Then consider the nighttime lighting. A color that looks close in a photograph may differ in texture, shade or the direction of its surface fibers when it is installed.
Why old foam changes the job
One problem we look for is deteriorated foam beneath older headliner material. The visible fabric can appear usable while the layer supporting it is crumbling or separating. Sagging, loose edges and material shedding are reasons to have the whole assembly assessed.
Adding stars is not a repair for a failing upholstery layer. The panel condition and preparation work need to be settled before the new finish and fiber pattern are planned. Depending on what is found, the quote may need to include removing old material, preparing the carrier and fitting a suitable new covering.
Age alone does not establish the repair scope. Send photos of the problem and mention previous repairs, water marks or loose areas. An in-person assessment may still be necessary to understand what is happening behind the surface.

Plan upholstery and starlights together
A starlight design involves the fabric, carrier, fiber ends and the space behind the panel. If you want a material change, discuss it before the stars are installed so that both parts of the build can be scoped together.
The finish should be considered with the lighting on and off. In daylight, look at contours, edges and transitions around the overhead console. At night, look at the balance of the points across the available surface. A dramatic night photo does not tell you whether the upholstery is neat.
Pillars and other trim near safety equipment need vehicle-specific assessment. The design must respect the original equipment and how the pieces attach. A material preference alone is not enough to establish that every panel can be wrapped in the same way.
Sunroofs, glass roofs and unfamiliar surfaces
A roof can include fixed upholstered trim, a moving shade and exposed glass. These are separate surfaces with different requirements. Identify which areas you want changed and show the roof with the shade open and closed.
Do not assume a material or installation method from another car will transfer to yours. This is especially important when comparing vehicles by brand alone. For Tesla and other glass-roof cars, the exact model, year, trim and existing surface need to be checked before recommending upholstery or star coverage.
What to send for an upholstery quote
Start with your year, make and model, then describe the pieces you want recovered and whether you are adding starlights. Include daylight photographs of the whole ceiling and close-ups of damaged or loose areas.
Ask the quote to identify the material, preparation, trim pieces included, any replacement parts and estimated downtime. Compare the same scope between proposals. We quote for the actual vehicle and work rather than publishing a price that assumes every roof needs the same preparation.
- Year, model, trim and roof type.
- Headliner only, or headliner plus specific pillars, visors and door panels.
- Material preference and a realistic project budget.
- Existing sagging, previous repairs or other condition concerns.
- Whether stars or ambient lighting are part of the same project.
Common questions
01Can I have upholstery without starlights?+
Yes. Headliner and interior trim upholstery can be discussed as its own project. Tell us which pieces and materials you have in mind.
02Do you recover seats or dashboards?+
No. Our upholstery work covers headliners and suitable interior trim, including pillars, visors and door panels. Seats and dashboards are excluded.
03Do I need new upholstery before adding stars?+
Not automatically. The existing material, backing and planned finish need to be assessed. Deteriorated foam or loose fabric should be addressed before adding the fiber installation.
04Will every black material match my existing interior?+
No. Black materials can differ in shade, texture and surface direction. Compare samples with the trim that will remain in the car.
