Identify the surface first. Fixed upholstered trim, a sliding or rolling shade, exposed glass and a folding roof are different installation problems.
Which surface are you asking to illuminate?
| Roof surface | Main question | Do not assume |
|---|---|---|
| Fixed headliner around an opening | Is there suitable material, clearance and a fiber route? | That the usable area equals the whole roof. |
| Moving rigid shade | How does it travel and where can fibers move safely? | That a fixed-panel method will work. |
| Rolling shade | What happens when the material retracts? | That fibers and attachments can roll with it. |
| Glass | Is the request actually for surrounding trim? | That fiber tips can be installed in glass like fabric. |
| Removable or folding roof | How does the roof detach, articulate or fold? | That a universal kit establishes compatibility. |
A sunroof does not automatically rule out stars
The fixed fabric area around a roof opening can be a candidate for an installation. Starlight Custom’s FAQ explicitly distinguishes that area from the more complicated question of lighting a fabric sunroof cover. The presence of a sunroof therefore starts an assessment rather than producing a universal yes or no.
Look at the perimeter, crosspieces and the area around the overhead console. Those surfaces can form a deliberate frame of stars even when a large part of the roof remains glass. A successful design does not have to imitate a solid roof.
Start by identifying the view you want with the shade open and closed. If your reference picture hides the roof opening, ask for another angle before assuming it demonstrates the same setup you have.
A moving shade needs a motion plan
A shade occupies more than one position. It may slide into a cavity or roll around a mechanism. Any proposed modification needs to account for that full motion and the space occupied by the added material, fibers and attachments.
The question is not simply whether a fiber is flexible. It is whether the assembled system can accommodate the required movement without being trapped, pulled, rubbed or interfering with the roof. A solution for one rigid shade should not be transferred to a different rolling shade.
Ask the installer to explain the proposed illuminated surfaces and demonstrate the original shade functions after the work. If a proposal requires giving up a function, that must be stated clearly before booking; it should not be discovered at collection.
Glass is not a headliner panel
The fiber-tip method described in these guides involves suitable interior panel surfaces. A glass roof is a different structure. A photograph of stars surrounding glass does not demonstrate stars installed through the glass itself.
Aftermarket panels, shades and roof coverings can change the appearance of a glass-roof cabin, but each is a separate product and fitment question. Ask whether the proposal changes the view through the glass, alters shade operation or adds a removable component.
Use precise language: “stars in the fixed trim around the glass” is different from “cover the glass with a star panel.” Those two requests can lead to very different designs, installation methods and ownership experience.
Why Tesla requests need model, year and trim details
Do not assume every Tesla has the same headliner material or construction. This page does not claim that every non-Alcantara Tesla has an identical plastic headliner. The actual surface must be identified before deciding whether covering or a different construction is needed.
Tesla publishes model-specific headliner procedures. The current 2024+ Model 3 procedure, for example, includes several related trim operations, electrical connections and an assisted removal through a passenger doorway. That is evidence of a specific assembly process, not a procedure for every Tesla or proof of starlight compatibility.
Send the exact vehicle and daylight roof photographs. If a surface needs upholstery to produce an acceptable star finish, agree the material and the areas being recovered as part of the quote rather than treating the change as an invisible extra.

Mercedes G-Class and S580 examples are not interchangeable
A G-Class example can help with the appearance of that cabin family, while an S580 inquiry needs its own roof and seating-area comparison. Even within a model, options and prior customization can change what the installer finds.
For a panoramic S-Class roof, ask for views that show the openings and the fixed areas around them. For a G-Wagon, show the whole ceiling and its overhead equipment. A matching exterior badge is not enough to establish the usable surface.
Our vehicle pages deliberately separate the visual reference from unverified year or trim claims. If you have a 2024 or 2025 car, say so, and ask whether the available example actually represents your configuration.
Plan the pattern around the opening
Removing a large opening from the illuminated area changes the density calculation. The same number of points distributed around a narrow border can look much busier than it does across a solid panel. Count and usable area need to be considered together.
Corners, narrow strips and crosspieces can make a uniform distribution look uneven from a seated position. Choose whether the roof should read as a consistent frame, clustered areas or a more understated background. Use images from both front and rear seats to discuss the result.
Shooting-star paths also need space and an intentional direction. A layout that works across an uninterrupted ceiling may need a different route around an opening. Discuss the path before assuming an advertised number of shooting effects will look natural.
Roof functions and original equipment remain part of the assessment
The headliner is near more than glass and fabric. Depending on the vehicle, there can be lighting, microphones, wiring, overhead controls, safety equipment and roof mechanisms. The available space should be assessed with those original functions in mind.
A headline claim that a kit fits “any car” is not a substitute for the vehicle’s service information. Do not use a generic star-ceiling tutorial as an instruction for removing roof equipment or selecting a wiring route.
At handover, review the affected functions and the finish around the opening. If a shade hesitates, a panel bulges or a new noise appears, document it and ask the installer to investigate. Do not keep cycling a mechanism that appears obstructed.
The photographs that make a compatibility conversation useful
Send a wide daylight picture from the front and another from the rear. Include the whole roof rather than only the place where you want stars. Take additional images with the shade fully open and fully closed, if it has those positions.
Include close-ups of the existing surface, overhead console and any loose or damaged areas. Mention a leak, prior roof repair or aftermarket modification. Those details can change the preparation or the feasibility of a particular design.
You do not need to diagnose the roof yourself. The aim is to make the first assessment specific enough that the installer can identify the open questions and explain what still requires an in-person look.
- Year, make, model, trim and roof option.
- Whole-roof daylight views from front and rear.
- Shade open and closed, where applicable.
- Close-ups of material and overhead fittings.
- A clear statement of which functions you want to retain.
- A reference image showing the desired coverage.
Common questions
01Can stars be installed around a panoramic sunroof?+
Often the fixed trim can be assessed for a layout. The amount of usable material and space behind it varies; confirm the surfaces for the exact vehicle.
02Does a kit marked “sunroof” include the moving shade?+
Not necessarily. It may simply allow for reduced fixed-headliner area. Ask explicitly about the shade and every included surface.
03Can a convertible use the same method?+
A folding roof needs its own specialist assessment. Fixed-roof instructions do not establish how fibers or attachments will behave during folding.
04Will I lose my roof functions?+
Do not assume either outcome. Specify the functions you want retained and have the installer explain the proposed method and any limitations before agreeing to the work.
